专业概况

在这里学什么？

The Master's in Counseling: Addiction program prepares students who wish to qualify for addiction counseling careers and become licensed professional counselors and certified advanced addiction counselors. Students will gain knowledge and experience in research, testing procedures, career development, consulting, counseling theories, ethics, techniques and philosophy. Elective hours will allow the individual student to gain additional knowledge and experience in areas of particular interest.

Service Delivery

The Master's in Counseling: Addiction Counseling program is offered in three formats. Traditional 16-week face to face courses on the CMU campus in Mt. Pleasant; 8-week face-to-face cohort courses offered at extension sites in Dearborn, MI, Southfield, MI, Grand Rapids, MI and Saginaw, MI; and 8-week online courses available in Mt. Pleasant and at extension sites.

Research Opportunities and Assistantships

Addiction counseling students may also apply for funding to engage in innovative service learning projects benefiting communities through the Counseling and Special Education (CSE) for Change program. In addition, various opportunities to engage in research projects with faculty are available.

Graduation Requirements

After the completion of required coursework, students will complete a 100-hour practicum in CMU's Center for Community Counseling and Development or an off-site addiction counseling agency setting; and a 600-hour internship experience in the addiction counseling field under the mentorship of a licensed counselor. Prior to graduation, students must successfully pass the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE).

English language requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A score of 500 PBT/61 IBT is required for conditional admission or 550 PBT/79 IBT for regular admission. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Module: A score of 5.5 required for conditional admission or 6.5 for regular admission. Pearson Test of English, Academic Module: A score of 44 for conditional admission or 53 for regular admission. International Baccalaureate (IB): A grade of 5 in English at the Higher Level is required for regular admission. Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A score of 69 is required for conditional admission or 77 for regular admission. ELS Language Center Program: Completion of Level 112 for regular admission. ELI (CMU English Language Program): Successful ELI completion and recommendations for regular admission.
