专业概况

在这里学什么？

The Master's in Counseling: School Counseling program prepares students who wish to qualify for school counseling careers in PK-12 settings and to become licensed and/or certified school counselors. Students will gain knowledge and experience in research, testing procedures, career development, consulting, counseling theories, ethics, techniques and philosophy.

Students in the School Counseling Master's program will be prepared for jobs in elementary schools, middle schools, and/or high schools. The School Counseling option is open to students with or without a Michigan teaching certificate. Graduates may meet the academic requirements for licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in Michigan.

The Master's in Counseling: School Counseling program is offered in three formats. Traditional 16-week face to face courses on the CMU campus in Mt. Pleasant; 8-week face-to-face cohort courses offered at extension sites in Dearborn, MI, Southfield, MI, Grand Rapids, MI and Saginaw, MI; and 8-week online courses available in Mt. Pleasant and at extension sites.

Research Opportunities and Assistantships

School Counseling students may also apply for funding to engage in innovative service learning projects benefiting communities through the Counseling and Special Education (CSE) for Change program.

Graduation Requirements

After the completion of required coursework, students will complete a 100-hour practicum in CMU's Center for Community Counseling and Development or at an off-site PK-12 school setting; and a 600-hour internship experience in a PK-12 school setting under the mentorship of a licensed school counselor. Prior to graduation, students must successfully pass the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE).

English language requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A score of 500 PBT/61 IBT is required for conditional admission or 550 PBT/79 IBT for regular admission. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Module: A score of 5.5 required for conditional admission or 6.5 for regular admission. Pearson Test of English, Academic Module: A score of 44 for conditional admission or 53 for regular admission. International Baccalaureate (IB): A grade of 5 in English at the Higher Level is required for regular admission. Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A score of 69 is required for conditional admission or 77 for regular admission. ELS Language Center Program: Completion of Level 112 for regular admission. ELI (CMU English Language Program): Successful ELI completion and recommendations for regular admission.
