The finance program at CMU will help you develop a solid background in all aspects of business. You will be well prepared for a career in finance, investments, banking and high-level management. You can even prepare to be a CEO: more chief executive officers have a background in finance than in any other business field.
The finance major is designed for students who are interested in a career in one of the three divisions of finance: corporate finance, investments, and financial institutions. Corporate finance involves decision making by financial managers at corporations. Investments deals with security analysis and building well-diversified portfolios. The study of financial institutions includes preparation for careers with institutions such as investment banks, commercial banks, savings & loans, credit unions, and life insurance companies.
The mission of the Finance major is to prepare students for employment and leadership across the spectrum of finance and business in global society.
The student learning objectives are:
1: Valuation: By the end of the finance program students will be able to calculate value of cash flows, real, and financial assets.
2: Financial Institutions: By the end of the finance program students will be able to list the attributes and roles of major financial institutions in our economic system.
3: Financial Statements: By the end of the finance program students will be able to analyze corporate financial statements.
4: Capital Budgeting: By the end of the finance program students will be able to explain the methods and process of capital budgeting.
5: Capital Structure: By the end of the finance program students will be able to evaluate risk-return implications of capital structure decisions and the process for return of funds to investors.
6: Derivatives: By the end of the finance program students will be able to understand valuation and trading practices for derivatives.
