Program Description

As a student in CMU's psychology program, you’ll learn to better understand, appreciate and, sometimes, predict behaviour. You’ll study and conduct cutting-edge research in modern laboratories and training facilities.

Learn from nationally and internationally renowned faculty who offer personalized instruction and mentorship in research. Choose from courses in behaviour analysis, clinical interviewing, health psychology, psychology and law, psychological testing, sports psychology and studies in personality.

This major is also offered via Global Campus/CMU Online. The Psychology Major is extremely flexible and is appropriate for anyone interested in psychology, regardless of post-graduation plans including graduate school. The Psychology Major requires completion of a minimum of 30 semester hours of PSY courses. Two additional concentrations are available (Mental Health Psychology and Business Psychology) that each require 36 credit hours.

Studying psychology will help you develop your knowledge and understanding of behavior. This knowledge will benefit you because:

• You will better understand yourself and your environment. In other words, studying psychology will enhance your life.
• u200bYou will acquire skills that will improve your performance in the career of your choice.
• You will be prepared for graduate study in psychology or related fields such as social work or counseling.

The three reasons for studying psychology are reflected in the three basic goals adopted by the Psychology Department. These goals are (a) to help students gain an awareness of the psychological processes operating within themselves and their environment; (b) to develop the technical competence for careers that require knowledge and skills in human development, mental health, behavior analysis, and other psychological areas; and (c) to provide students with a strong foundation in the basic knowledge and skills necessary to pursue graduate study in psychology or related fields.

English language requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (minimum score of 550 PBT, 213 CBT, or 79 IBT), International English Language Testing System (minimum score of 6.5), Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (minimum score of 77), Pearson Test of English (minimum score of 53), ELS Language Center Program: Completion of Level 112.
