Program Description

How can individuals stretch their income for maximum purchasing power? How can business efficiently use materials and labour in order to stay competitive in a global marketplace? How will government decisions affect the nation’s economy? In CMU’s economics program, you’ll tackle these questions and gain a better understanding of supply and demand, consumption of goods and services, and inflation and recession.

The Economics major seeks to provide students with the analytical skills to succeed in their professional endeavors and to become productive citizens of the world. We will judge our success by our students' ability to reason independently, to examine both the positive and normative aspects of an issue and to draw conclusions that can be supported by sound analysis.

Goals of Economics major: 1. Develop the quantitative reasoning necessary to be literate in the tools of the economics discipline. 2. Develop analytical thinking skills that will allow students to critically evaluate social phenomena and the actions of individuals, governments and firms. 3. Learn problem solving skills as a way to improve decision-making. 4. Promote the development of written communication skills that make decisions better understood by those affected by them.

All economics students gain a set of quantitative and analytical skills that will serve them well in their careers and personal lives. Economics seeks to measure and predict human behavior, so it is the most quantitative of the social sciences. Each major must acquire a proficiency in mathematics and statistics to be adequately prepared for the analytical work required in the discipline: problem-solving and decision-making. Every student will be challenged to identify problems, create alternative solutions and decide which option will best serve the goals of the decision-maker. Since an economics student acquires general training in decision-making skills, there are a wide variety of employment opportunities upon graduation and beyond. These general skills allow graduates to successfully compete in a constantly changing labor market during this information age.
