Program Description

Whether you're interested in theoretical or applied mathematics, statistics or actuarial science, CMU's math programs will help you build problem-solving skills for a wide range of careers. Working with faculty supported by National Science Foundation grants, you'll apply the equations and theories you've learned in class and present your research results at the annual campus wide Student Research and Creative Endeavours Exhibition. Student organizations such as Kappa Mu Epsilon, Gamma Iota Sigma Nu and the Statistics Club also prepare you for the professional world.u200b

The Concentration in Applied Mathematics is designed for mathematics students who plan to either enter graduate school after graduation from CMU or use mathematics as an adjunct skill in their professional life outside academe. This includes students planning to enter professions as wide-ranging as mathematical modeling, accounting and finance, actuary, computer programming, engineering, and a variety of positions within the health and social sciences.

Our programs lead to discovery, analysis and dissemination of mathematics, and mathematics education. We provide students with a full appreciation of mathematics and its applications. Our goal is to equip the graduate with the tools necessary to fully participate in a technological society and a competitive global environment.

English language requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (minimum score of 550 PBT, 213 CBT, or 79 IBT), International English Language Testing System (minimum score of 6.5), Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (minimum score of 77), Pearson Test of English (minimum score of 53), ELS Language Center Program: Completion of Level 112.
