Program Description

Learn the fundamental principles of the universe as you develop analytical skills that apply to careers in research, financial management, computing and teaching. Whether you want to study the behaviour of matter and energy on the smallest scale (nuclei, atoms and other basic constituents of matter) or the grandest (stars and galaxies), CMU’s physics major offers something for everyone with concentrations in astronomy, chemistry-physics education and physics education.u200bu200b

Program Description

Reach for the stars and space out studying celestial bodies, moons and galaxies at CMU. If the mysteries of the universe put your mind into overdrive, you’ll love using CMU’s advanced equipment and astronomical observatory atop Brooks Hall. If your dream is to be an astronomer, you’ll have a bright future earning a physics degree with an astronomy concentration at CMU.u200bu200b

A degree in astronomy may qualify you for a wide range of positions related to different areas such as engineering, mathematics, computer science and environmental science; and for those with the appropriate background, some nonscience fields as well, such as finance.

This option is available within the physics major for students with a particular interest in astronomy or astrophysics. This program provides the background desired by most astronomy graduate programs. Total: 50-65 semester hours

English language requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (minimum score of 550 PBT, 213 CBT, or 79 IBT), International English Language Testing System (minimum score of 6.5), Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (minimum score of 77), Pearson Test of English (minimum score of 53), ELS Language Center Program: Completion of Level 112.
