Campus-based program with field and practicum experiences in high school settings culminating in Missouri teacher certification

A person who enjoys physics and likes to work with young people should consider a career as a physics teacher. To prepare, you would complete most of the first physics, mathematics, and chemistry courses that any physics major would take, and apply them to earn a Bachelor of Science in either Education or in Physics with Master’s level licensure from the College of Education. the Physics Education option. In either case, a program of graduated preparation courses will prepare you for a career in the classroom. The facilities available in physics include the state-of-the art instrumentation of the Center for Nanoscience, wherein will be found advanced equipment for such specialized areas x-ray crystallography and atom-scale microscopy. The St. Louis Area benefits from activities of a particularly strong association of physics teachers, with which UMSL has an excellent relationship.

B.S. Ed. in Secondary Education with Emphasis in Physics

The B.S. Ed. is a professional education degree designed for students who wish to pursue a teaching career in secondary schools. Much of the discipline-specific coursework parallels the B.A. or B.S. degree in the discipline; however, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) requires specific coursework for teacher certification. Therefore, students interested in the B.S. Ed. should contact the advising office (OASIS) in the College of Education for discipline-specific requirements. Note: To obtain teaching certification, DESE requires a 3.0 GPA in the discipline and professional education coursework, as well as a 2.75 GPA overall.

Students who have completed high school must submit final transcripts and degree certificates or exam results. Students who have studied at a college or university must submit university transcripts to date. If you have completed more than 24 credit hours at a university, you do not need to submit high school transcripts. Transcripts are required from all high schools or universities attended. Proof of English proficiency: Minimum requirements are 61 TOEFL, 5.5 IELTS, or 44 PTE-A, 85-90 Duolingo.
