COURSE OVERVIEW

History and Welsh explores medieval, early modern and modern history through subjects including women’s history and gender, cultural history and the history of religion, health and medicine. You will also learn about Welsh in the workplace, language past and present, working in two languages and contemporary literature.

In the first year of the course, complete beginners in the Welsh language will follow modules which aim to provide a sound grounding in Welsh grammar, the spoken word and culture.

Studying this three-year BA degree course opens up a range of exciting career opportunities by helping you develop skills, which are highly valued by employers.

YOUR HISTORY AND WELSH (A PATHWAY FOR SECOND LANGUAGE STUDENTS) EXPERIENCE

During your three-year History and Welsh course you will have an academic mentor for any pastoral and academic support you may need, and The Society of Ancient Studies and History student society organises social and cultural events.

Throughout your course you will study a wide variety of modules. The Welsh Department has expertise in the areas of: Language and Linguistics; Language and Policy; Literature.

You can also study optional modules in Creative Writing and Gender and Culture, the latter with specialist researchers and lecturers.

The emphasis throughout the course is on developing writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively in Welsh. For example, the Welsh and Work module incorporates a work placement scheme. Students are placed in schools, television companies, translation units, language enterprises, or in any office or business where Welsh is the medium of work.
