专业概况

The School of the Environment offers a program of graduate study and research leading to a master of science in natural resource sciences. The M.S. in natural resource sciences emphasizes original research by the student. This degree provides an atmosphere of scholarship coupled with research opportunities that produces people capable of responding to the complicated issues of use, management, and protection of the environment and its natural resources.

The M.S. in Natural Resource Sciences includes a thesis that is a publishable contribution to understanding ecosystems and natural resources. Specializations are offered in areas such as wildlife ecology, conservation and biodiversity, forest ecology, spatial aspects of natural resources and aquatic resources and their diverse ecological and/or social values. The specific requirements are given below and are subject to completion after entering the masters program.

Attain knowledge and expertise in core disciplinary areas. Think critically and develop creative solutions to scientific problems. Effectively communicate the results of their research. Become visible members of the scientific community taking organizational and service roles.

To enable students to become effective researchers and teachers:

Recognize important scientific problems and contribute to solving them. Master the field, laboratory, data analysis and theoretical skills necessary to perform the research. Write research grant proposals or otherwise obtain research funding (expectation is higher for PhD students). Become effective teachers in field, laboratory and lecture-room settings.

To provide scientific leadership and expertise at the local, state and national levels:

Attract and retain world-class faculty in appropriate disciplinary areas. Assist students to engage in outreach activities. Prepare students to successfully compete for jobs in industry, academia, and government.
