Program Description

Immerse yourself in the challenging and integrated laboratory and fieldwork experiences that will prepare you for a rewarding career or graduate study in a biology-related field. In addition to research and professional internship opportunities, you'll discover hands-on learning experiences through natural environments available only through CMU, such as the Beaver Island Biological Station, the new state-of-the-art Biosciences Building, the Fabiano Botanical Gardens, and more.

Research Opportunities and Assistantships

All applicants to the program are encouraged to apply for a teaching assistantship, which are awarded on a competitive basis. Students should discuss the possibility of a research assistantship with their advisor when applying to the biology graduate program, as a limited number of research assistantships are available.

Most students follow a thesis option, which requires course work approved by the student's graduate committee and the completion and write-up of a major research project. Some students follow a nonthesis option, based mostly on course work, with a minor research or independent study report. Students are assessed on their thesis seminar, oral defense and written report. The specific learning outcomes are available from the biology office.

English language requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A score of 500 PBT/61 IBT is required for conditional admission or 550 PBT/79 IBT for regular admission. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Module: A score of 5.5 required for conditional admission or 6.5 for regular admission. Pearson Test of English, Academic Module: A score of 44 for conditional admission or 53 for regular admission. International Baccalaureate (IB): A grade of 5 in English at the Higher Level is required for regular admission. Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A score of 69 is required for conditional admission or 77 for regular admission. ELS Language Center Program: Completion of Level 112 for regular admission. ELI (CMU English Language Program): Successful ELI completion and recommendations for regular admission.
