专业概况

Overview

Mechanical Engineering offers an exciting environment where many skills are brought together to create innovative products and the infrastructure and technology for manufacture. The first two Levels provide a grounding in the core disciplines of Mechanical Engineering, which allows students to make an informed choice of the subsequent options. An individual project forms part of Year 4.

Accreditation

Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

The course aims to produce BEng graduates who: • meet the educational base required by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for registration as a Chartered Engineer after undertaking a period of further learning to Masters level; • have a good technical understanding of the essential facts across the discipline, but also an awareness of specialist application of technology; • are equipped with a sound basis in theoretical engineering principles and methods and their application in the context of design and analysis; • are able to operate in team and multidisciplinary contexts; • have an appreciation of the wider societal and commercial influences on and impact of the discipline; • have problem-solving skills and the ability to apply such skills in developing innovative solutions to society's practical needs; • have established and fostered links with industry through industrial visits and an optional industrial placement leading to the award of Diploma in Industrial Training (DIT); • have developed the personal qualities and professional competencies of mechanical engineers; • have been able to pursue their personal interests in depth by providing a range of specialist options; • have the practical skills required specifically by mechanical engineers and more widely by any numerate professional position.

Assessment

The assessment policy for the course incorporates a range of assessment types. Formative tests and tutorial exercises are scheduled during modules to provide feedback on performance and are used to inform further development. Continuous assessment during modules and summative assessment at the conclusion of modules both contribute to the overall assessment and are used to measure formally achievement in specified learning outcomes.
