MA (Hons) Economics and Accountancy at Edinburgh Business School will give you the skills to investigate, analyse and answer global economic questions and a specialist understanding of accounting theories and practice.
This degree does not require prior knowledge of the core disciplines of economics and accountancy. Study begins at an introductory level and the degree has a flexible structure to enable students to tailor their studies so that they can pursue their own interests.
As a result, graduates are able to embark upon successful careers, especially in accounting, banking, finance, the civil service and a wide range of management roles, or pursue further study in economics and related disciplines.
Your learning will be underpinned by the knowledge of highly respected economists who design and teach our courses with a real-world focus that stems directly from their global research into economic issues.
Accounting courses are taught with an industry-focus by academics and experienced practitioners and many are accredited by major professional bodies in the UK.
Accreditation
Heriot-Watt University is accredited as a Bloomberg Experiential Learning Partner, recognising us as a leader in experiential learning in the area of finance.
The course aims are:
The MA Economics and Accountancy programme has been designed to offer students a coherent programme of study, providing sufficient coverage of its disciplines to enable graduates to proceed to postgraduate study at any UK institution, while allowing sufficient flexibility in provision for students to develop areas of interest to them. The programme meets the criteria of the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework for progression, and intermediate and final awards. It also draws on the Quality Assurance Agency benchmarking statement to ensure that content and learning outcomes are broadly comparable with that of programmes offered in similar institutions.
Assessment
The programme uses a range of assessment types at all stages of study. Formative assessment is used in many courses to provide students and staff with feedback on performance and the achievement of learning outcomes. This feedback is used both to inform programme development, but also to enable the adaptation of learning opportunities to meet the needs of individual students and the cohort of learners. Summative assessment for most courses will involve a combination of coursework and examinations, with greater weight typically given to unseen examination rather than coursework. The format of all assessment is determined by its appropriateness for measuring the learning outcomes of courses.
