As a result, individuals across professions recognize the need to communicate effectively. The extent to which individuals become proficient communicators will determine their ability to lead personally satisfying and productive lives.

Through the study of communication, we learn about human communication processes and their role in the creation and development of social experience. Interpersonal and public communication covers a variety of areas such as public speaking, intercultural communication, organizational communication, family systems, communication education, small group communication, debate and persuasion.

Program Description

No matter what, you’re always communicating. In the communication program at CMU, you’ll develop a background in communication skills, problem solving and resourcefulness. Our nationally recognized faculty members help you explore various aspects of communication and guide you toward a career or graduate education. You can travel and compete on the forensics team at intercollegiate speech and debate tournaments. You’ll also be able to gain professional development experiences through internships with organizations such as Walt Disney World, the Palace of Auburn Hills, General Motors, Dow Chemical, the Michigan House of Representatives and Michigan Governor’s Office.

English language requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (minimum score of 550 PBT, 213 CBT, or 79 IBT), International English Language Testing System (minimum score of 6.5), Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (minimum score of 77), Pearson Test of English (minimum score of 53), ELS Language Center Program: Completion of Level 112.
