The Master of Teaching (Special Education) program at Flinders is designed for those who wish to teach students in regular classroom settings as well as students with special education needs in secondary or special settings. They combine studies in primary or secondary education with studies in special education. Included are curriculum studies, special education studies and professional experience.

What you will study

The program includes an introduction to teaching and research in the education profession, educational planning for students with special needs, and interventions for students with literacy and numeracy difficulties. Topics discuss differentiation and inclusive educational practices, and teaching Indigenous Australian students, as well as supporting learners with disabilities and challenging behaviour. Primary R-7 curriculum topics deal with teaching in and through the expressive arts, and thinking and working scientifically in the primary years, with mathematics curriculum studies in context. Secondary curriculum topics deal with understanding curriculum development in the middle years of school and senior years specialisations.

Your career

The Master of Teaching prepares graduates to enter the teaching profession with confidence and competence. Although the majority of education graduates go on to employment as a teacher in the public or private sector, some choose to follow other pathways. Graduate roles include community education officer, and education and engagement officer.

Potential occupations include:

• school coordinators and principals
• curriculum and policy advisers in departments of education
• advisers to government departments and other policy makers.
