Be at the forefront of new life as you learn the fundamentals to becoming a dynamic, compassionate and competent midwife.

Course overview

After completing this course, you will be able to register as a midwife on the NMC professional register. Many of our graduates now work as advanced midwife practitioners/ward managers or have roles in specialised areas. Our students enjoy the course and this has been reflected in our National Student Survey results for overall satisfaction.

Teaching methods

The theory components of the course are mainly classroom based, with skills being taught within the skills laboratory. Half of the course is based in practice, where you will work with mentors and other health professionals.

Assessment

Assessment of theory includes examinations; essays; critical incidents; reflections on practice; presentations; and case studies. Practice is assessed using skills assessments, structured examinations and assessment of professional behaviour. All assessment meets NMC criteria.

Job prospects

All graduates become qualified midwifery practitioners, initially practising in all areas of midwifery, supported by their employers providing preceptorship programmes. Midwives upon gaining the necessary experience have progressed to management positions, become educators or practice development midwives, advanced midwifery practitioners or consultant midwives in normality or public health or have specialised in certain areas of midwifery practice such as perinatal mental health, antenatal screening, fetal medicine, safeguarding, ultrasonography, substance misuse, research and teenage pregnancy.
