Course overview
This course offers you the opportunity to study one of the world’s most exciting and vibarant industries. Our course aims to teach you how to plan/manage events and festivals, and highlights the importance of events in various industries. You will also explore a range of industry-related issues and learn how events/festival businesses operate. There are also an array of opportunities to get involved with working on live events and festivals locallys, regionally and nationally, supporting and assisting events and festivals organisations in and around Shrewsbury, Shropshire and further afield.
Why study this course with us?
The course at Shrewsbury has been developed from the success of Events Management at the University of Chester, which regularly scores high levels of student satisfaction and employability prospects within the event and festival industry. The course is integrated through a study of the practices, processes, people and places that characterise event and festival activity at various levels. The course is underpinned by the active research and extensive experience of the lecturing team.
We arrange field trips every year, and invite guest lecturers in from industry to share a wealth of experience. There are also opportunities to work with professional events and festivals organisations; whether that be on a volunteer basis, as an intern, on the Work Based Learning placement (as part of your course), or the Sandwich Placement Year (four-year option).
Teaching methods
You may be taught via a range of different methods, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical workshops, expert guest speakers from industry, and field visits to events management venues and events/tourism destinations.
Assessment
We use a broad range of assessment methods, including reports, academic essays, examinations, discussion groups, presentations, debates, practical work and portfolios of evidence.
Job prospects
We aim to prepare you for a wide range of careers within events and festivals management and related industries in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, in the UK and overseas. However, you will also be well suited to continue your studies and progress to a higher degree level.
Our graduates have gone on to work in a wide array of roles which includes international conference management; music festival management; charity fundraising roles; venue management; and creating their own event companies.
